Mycorrhizal Fungi and how it can help your plants

A few weeks ago I attended the Garden Market Expo in Las Vegas. This was my third year of attending, and each year the number of "green" vendors increases. As a landscaper I am thrilled to have more choices in terms of natural pest control and organic fertilizers. I sat in on a seminar given by Gisele Schoniger of Kellogg Garden Product on mycorrhizal fungi. Mycorrhizal fungi creates a symbiotic relationship with the plant. It allows the plant to absorb nutrients and water more easily from the soil. There are several products that have encourage the growth of this fungi. One in particular is Dr. Earth www.drearth.com.

At Go Green Gardeners we use Dr. Earth for all of clients and have had great results from it.

The problem with some products like Miracle Grow is that it is like putting your plants on steriods. It creates weaker cell walls and a plant that is more susceptible to disease because it is weaker.

Stay tuned for a discussion on N P K - what is it and why do we care.

In the meantime get out in your garden! Anne
